I agree that most religions are very toxic, but the deities worshipped in them are real. Humans lived in extremely primitive conditions for most of our history. We lived in the forest with the other ice age animals with camp fires as our only source of light. We hadn't deforested the world yet. The forest is natural habitat of spirits. We were constantly surrounded by them. Paranormal phenomena were an inescapable reality of life. They couldn't delude themselves into being secular.
Western societies spiritual harmed themselves when they genocided the pagans in their own countries and replaced their ancient pagan way of life with the monotheistic religion of Christianity. They brainwashed themselves into hating the deities, nature spirits and fae beings they lived with and respected for millions of years. They further spiritually damaged themselves when they decided to completely throw away the belief in spirits and replace it with the materialistic philosophies of science. The disbelief of spirits and magick atrophies your natural psychic senses. Contemporary society teaches you to ignore your psychic senses and paranormal phenomenon. Every other society on Earth has more paranormal phenomena because they haven't replaced their ancient spiritual practices and worldviews as thoroughly as westerners. Over half of all Cubans practice traditional African religions like Palo Mayombe and Santeria. Hundreds of millions of latinos practice witchcraft. The Mexican cult of Santa Muerte is the fastest growing religion in North America. That strong belief in spirits contributes to more paranormal activity than in the western world.
I hate when Christians call their religion spirtuality. Christianity is a human creation. Religions are products of human culture. The negative elements in them reflect the evil of our own society, but not the nature of the deities worshipped in them. Hinduism is another example of a fucked up religion. The caste system is a tool of oppression created by the rich people of their society. It was created to permanently stratify their society, separate the rich from the poor is a strict, inescapable social and economic hierarchy. Human constructs designed to control their society has nothing to do with the many gods and goddesses worshipped in their religion. Spirituality is living with spirits and the spirit world. You don't need to reconstruct ancient pagan religions to interact with the spirits. You simply need to make a sincere effort to reach out to them.
