My first books, like the hoodoo ones and The Sorcerer's Shadow were from Amazon. I got the rest from ThriftBooks.
Thats kinda hard to say. It really depends on what path you want to take. You can build an entire practice off of a single good book. There are a few different topics contained in my collection. Black Magic For Kids has really good curses in it. All of my thin hoodoo pamphlets from Luck Mojo are very good. The Voudon Gnostic Workbook is an entire magickal system. All of my vampirism books are useful. The only books I kinda regret buying are S.Cononnly's and E. A Koetting's. S.Connolly has a ton of typos in her books and E. A Koetting put some dumb shit in his books, but I just take what's useful and leave the goofy parts.

they look interesting, even though i dont belive in most of this stuff i still think it would be nice to read a couple books or two. Do you have any recommendations?
